Treasury phasing out paper checks by end of September
The U.S. Department of the Treasury has announced that the federal government will stop issuing paper checks for most federal payments beginning September 30, 2025.
Most Americans already receive their federal benefits—like Social Security or Veterans benefits—through direct deposit, so no action is needed if you’re already set up.
However, if you are still receiving a paper check, now is the time to switch to direct deposit. Direct deposit is safer, faster, and more convenient than paper checks.
Here are your options to make the switch:
- Call the Federal agency that pays your benefits and follow their instructions.
- Call the Electronic Payment Solution Center at 800-967-6857 (Monday–Friday, 9:00 a.m.–7:00 p.m. ET).
💡 Don’t have a bank account for direct deposit? Traditional Bank can help. Open an account online here or stop by your local branch.
⚠️ Reminder: Always beware of government impersonation scams. Confirm requests by visiting the official agency website or using phone numbers you know are real.
